Baby Toys And Play Time

Play time is an essential element in the growth and development of your baby. Play helps them learn, engage with their environment, develop their cognitive and motor skills, establish emotional connections and much more. Find out more at 10 reasons why play is important.

Playtime is crucial for your newborn’s development. While your new baby will sleep for up to 16 hours a day, it’s important to make the most of their awake time by introducing play and interaction. This will help your newborn to learn about the world around them and develop socially, emotionally, and physically.

Toys suitable from birth include activity mats, gym arches, mobiles, tummy time mats/rollers, soft rattles, musical toys, plush toys, teethers and black and white books.

Toys For Older Babies.

Between 6 and 9 months, your baby is practicing the range of their voices, copying sounds and mastering object permanence and working on scooting or crawling. They’re also continuing to develop their hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills (e.g. hand to hand transfer) and gross motor skills (e.g. sitting or crawling). Sensory play engages your baby’s five senses, helping their brain form important connections. Those noisy toys are doing a good job!

Toys that have music, make a noise or encourage interaction are a good choice. They will enjoy stacking toys, rolling or wheeled items such as balls or cars. Anything tactile will be a big hit, so look for toys or books with different textures, buttons, tags, sliders, etc.

Play Time for Toddlers

Your toddler will be mastering their fine and gross motor skills. Toys that encourage movement will be a hit, such as walkers, ride-on or climbing activities. They will enjoy building or making so puzzles, blocks or construction toys are a good choice. Your toddler will be developing an awareness of their surroundings and may have a fascination for a particular category, e.g. a fascination for fire engines, or dinosaurs, or dogs. They may also want to copy activities of parents, e.g. by using a tool bench or kitchen. Encourage this development with pretend play toys in their interested category.
