Pram, Pushchair, Stroller Or Buggy: Is There A Difference?
Yes. There is a difference, although the terms are sometimes used interchangeably. Here is a summary.
A PRAM is designed specifically for newborn babies and are suitable until around six months old. They have a bassinet or carrycot (another interchangeable term) that allows your baby to lie flat. They are usually parent facing. Some prams can be purchased as part of a 2in1 bundle. This enables you to convert it into a pushchair when your baby has grown.
PUSHCHAIRS are generally sturdy and can be forward-facing, or parent facing, or both. They have reclinable seats. You can recline some pushchair seats fully flat, making them suitable if you have a younger baby.
STROLLERS are more lightweight, and easily collapsible. They are ideal for older babies, or for when you’re travelling. However, not all strollers are suitable for newborn babies (because they don’t lie flat) , so be sure to check this out before purchasing.
A BUGGY can really be any of the above, depending on who you’re talking to!
TRAVEL SYSTEMS are also called a 3-in-1 or All-in-one. They combine a carrycot, a pushchair and an infant carrier/ car seat. They all share one frame / chassis and are interchangeable by clicking on or off the frame. Travel systems are useful when your baby is sleeping because you can move baby without waking them. You can save money by buying as a bundle compared to buying individual components.
DOUBLES AND TANDEMS come with 2 seats and are useful for twins or if you have 2 siblings of different ages but both still needs a ride. A Double or Twin pushchair has 2 seats side by side. A Tandem has seats with one on top and one underneath. Some Tandems are available as 2in1 or 3in1 bundles. Not all twins and tandems are suitable for newborn babies, so check if your baby will be able to lie flat if you are buying for a newborn.
